Jordanian artist Maha Khoury approaches her canvases not only as spaces on which to paint, but also as fabrics onto which she weaves the intricate lives of people, their relationships and time. Although she holds a bachelor’s degree in English education, Khoury began her artistic journey in 1997 and has had limited formal art training, having only taken classes in fine arts at the University of Louisiana. Figures in space and their relationship with time are Khoury’s main artistic focus. Her works are based on the contrast between light and darkness, and are silhouettes that reflect the diverse times of day when shades vary in their depths and intensities, which determines the placement of her artistic figures. Between these figures are spaces that are infiltrated by clear illuminations, while distinctive shades of human presence all float on spaces of thoughts, dreams, hopes and emotions, which are melded together in one structure that hovers on the surface of the canvas. She uses deep and muted colors but experiments with distinctive application methods and different brushstrokes to achieve her signature mix of texture and smoothness, juxtaposing dark with light to spotlight spirited and deep figures, resulting in backgrounds that conceal but also reveal what is hidden behind the silence.

طوعت الفنانة الأردنية مها خوري القماش الأبيض إلى ماهو ابعد من مجرد مساحة للرسم، فقد أصبح نسيجاً مرناً تحوك فيه شخوصها لتدبّ فيـهم الحيـاة فيتفاعـلون -بتفاصيـل حياتهم وعلاقاتهم المتفاوتة - مع عامل الوقت كما يتفاعلون مع السطح التصويري. حصلت خوري على بكالوريوس في الأدب الإنجليزي، ثم درست الفن في عدة دورات في جامعة لويزيانا، ومن هناك بدأت رحلتها الفنية سنة 1997..
الأشخـاص في الفـراغ وعلاقتـهم بالزمن، هو المـوضوع الأسـاس في لوحات الفنانة مها خـوري. أعمالـها تقوم على مبدأ التبـاين بين الضوء والظلام، أعمالٌ ظلِّيّةٌ تعكس أوقاتاً مختلفةً من اليوم حيث تتفاوت الظلال في شدتـها لتحدد مكان الشخوص وتظهر الإضاءات المتنوعة متخللة الفراغات ما بين هذه الشخوص، ويطفو الوجود الإنساني في فضاء من الأفكـار والأحـلام والآمال والمشاعر التي تلتحم جميعها في بناءٍ واحدٍ لتطفو على السطح التصويري. تلجأ خوري إلى استخدام الألوان الغامقة والهادئة غير أنها لا تخشى تجربة أساليب متجددة وضربات فرشاة متنوعة لتحقيق بَصْمتها المعتادة في الخلط ما بين الملامس المتفاوتة والإضاءات الواقعة على جموعها المتنقلة التي تحتضن في أعماقها أرواحاً متمردة أحيانا ومتأملة أحيانا أخرى، لتكشف بفضاءاتها المصمتة وخلفيات أعمالها الغامضة ما تخفيه هذه الجماعات من عواطف وطموح وإصرار خلف ذلك الصمت.
